Just for Andrew...

Andrew tells me that my closets smell like hamsters. I'm finishing the cedar lining in the hall closet, and I'm out of the corner molding to finish them off. You can't buy it at any of the home improvement stores, so I ordered it online. The website I ordered it from foolishly asked me, "Special Instructions or Comments About Your Order":

Paint and stucco everywhere!

Dave Alfaro (who painted the living room brown) was given an encore to do the following:

Front Bedroom
-------------
-prime and texture ceiling
-paint baseboard and window trim

Middle Bedroom
--------------
-prime and texture ceiling
-paint baseboard and window trim

Hallway
-------
-paint baseboard
-paint (1 coat) walls, same color they are now

Kitchen
-------
-prime and texture ceiling
-prime (1 coat) and paint (2 coats) walls
-print and paint the exterior door white (current stained wood)
-paint trim around archway into hall

doors
-----
there are 8 new interior doors. doors and casing around all of them
need to be painted (1 coat)

And that's exactly what he did:

Middle bedroom:

Front bedroom:

I decided to texture the ceilings because Rocco couldn't seem to get the tape lines out of them despite his best efforts. I had Dave use Lowe's textured ceiling paint (sand mix) with just a regular smooth roller to get a nice light stucco texture. This:

looks so much better than this:

If you can't tell in the picture, just trust me.

New Doors and Knobs

Back in December, I used Craigslist to find and hire a contractor to replace all the doors in the house and finish the molding. Lucky for me, he was the worst contractor I've ever worked with. Absentminded, slow, and incredibly sloppy. Be that as it may, all the doors interior doors have been replaced, and the closet in the master bedroom now has real doors instead of those wretched bi-fold things:

Half of the doors in the house had were two panel wood, and the other half were hollow slab, so I replaced all of them with six panel Masonite.

While I liked the Schlage locksets I ordered online, I had a 20% off coupon for Home Depot, so I ended up getting the same model Schlage knobs there.

It is so nice to be rid of those horrible gold tones. I heart nickel.

A Washington Gassy Morning

I got home from the gym this morning to find the meter reader from Washington Gas in my driveway. She had just read the meter and mentioned something about a gas leak. I told her that some people had looked into it last month or the month before, that it seemed like the gas smell was coming from the street.

I went in the house, showered and changed, and by the time I came out there were two trucks and orange cones in front of my house. They think the gas line from my meter to the street is leaking, and will be spending the day turning my driveway back into tiny pieces of asphalt from whence it came.

Spectacular.

Power to the People

I issued a cry in January to cancel the hookers because my electric usage had shot through the roof. To this day, I'm not sure what caused that period of insane utilization:

We'll wait and see what the next few months brings.

Kitchen :: Recessed Lighting

Even before I took the ceiling fan out of the kitchen, I have never felt there was enough light in there. Moving the wall and putting in french doors has opened the kitchen a lot, but that doesn't help at night.

I dug through Craigslist looking for electricians until I found Felix Hernandez. He came out, gave me an estimate, and as timing worked out he finished everything the very same day. Six new recessed lights, the old ceiling fan fixture was removed and replaced with a box over where the (future rectangular) kitchen table will go and put on its own switch, and an outlet was added to the front bedroom next to where the TV/phone/internet jack was installed.

The new recessed fixtures use 65w bulbs, but I bought two 14w halogens today to make sure they are a suitable replacement (which they are). I'll pick up four more and swap them out. Since I hate dimmers, this way I'm only burning 84w instead of 390w when they're all on.

I've already signed a contract with Rocco (who moved the living room wall) to come back and skim out the walls and ceilings in the kitchen and front two bedrooms. Once he's done, it's just a matter of painting and finishing up the trim before the inside of the house is done.

Carpet :: Complete

I finally got around to having the carpet installed today in the hallway and master bedroom. Came out perfect in my opinion, especially when you consider the condition of the floors in the hallway and the master bedroom.
